Baylor History Scholarships Set to Open February First
On February 1st, Baylor’s History Department scholarship portal for the 2023/2024 academic school year will open to all undergraduate History majors who have completed 12 credit hours of history at Baylor.
If you would like to apply to be considered for any of the other scholarships awarded by the History Department this year, fill out the application form found on the department’s website. This form will be open from February 1st to March 3rd, and it only requires you to submit one application to be considered for every scholarship available. The Scholarships available for the 2023/2024 academic school year are:
- The George Michael Stuart Scholarship in History
Established in 1988, the George M. Stuart Scholarship fund was created to honor the legacy of this 1957 Baylor graduate. This is a merit-based scholarship available to all History majors.
- The Kevin Hal Reynolds Scholarship
Established in 1998, the Kevin Hal Reynolds Scholarship is a merit and need-based scholarship to assist History majors.
- The Lavonia Jenkins-Barnes Endowed Scholarship
The Lavonia Jenkins Barnes Endowed Scholarship Fund was established on May 10th, 1995, in honor of Mrs. Barnes and her contribution to Baylor and Waco. This is a merit and/or need-based scholarship directed towards History majors with an interest in Women’s History and/or Gender Studies.
- The John M. Roberts Scholarship
Following the tragic passing of John Michael Roberts in 1994, a tree was dedicated to him in the Burleson Quadrangle and The John M. Roberts Scholarship was established in his honor. This is a merit-based scholarship open to all History majors.
- The James W. Vardaman History Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2003 to honor of Dr. James W. Vardaman, Professor Emeritus of History and Master Teacher at Baylor University. This is a merit-based scholarship open to all History majors participating in a Baylor study abroad program.
- The Gene and Mary Richardson Endowed Scholarship Fund in Honor of Dr. James and Elizabeth Vardaman
Established in 2012, this scholarship fund was created by Gene and Mary Richardson in honor of Dr. James and Elizabeth Vardaman. This scholarship is available to all History majors participating in a Baylor study abroad program.
- The Guittard-Verlander-Voegtle Endowed Scholarship Fund in History
The Guittard-Verlander-Voegtle Endowed Scholarship Fund was created in 2016 to honor the Guittard family’s grandfather, Dr. Francis G. Guittard, their step-grandmother, Josephine Glenn Guittard, and their parents, Chief Justice Clarence A. Guittard and Mary Louise Kee Guittard. This is a merit-based scholarship open to History majors with a desire to teach history or take an advanced degree in history.
- The Jenice and Crawford Long Endowed Scholarship Fund in History
Established by Jenice and Crawford Long, this scholarship is a merit and need-based scholarship open to all History majors, with a preference towards students that desire to teach history after graduation.
- Roe and Jessie Betterton Endowed Scholarship Fund in History
Established in 2020 by siblings Ken L. Betterton and Karen Ro Betterton Heuberger in honor of their parents, Roe and Jessie Betterton, this scholarship is available to all College of Arts & Sciences students, with a preference towards History majors who have completed twelve or more hours of U.S. History courses.
