Graduate Program Admissions
Requirements
For admission to the Master's Program or the Doctoral Program in History, the department requires:
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- OPTIONAL: Score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) predictive of success in the program. Strong GRE scores can strengthen an application, but they are only one factor considered among many, and GRE scores are not required.
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
- Vita (resume)
- Writing sample
- Writing samples are on average 20-30 double-spaced pages in length. Ideally, your writing sample will demonstrate how you analyze primary sources, engage with secondary sources, and make a historical argument or interpretive claim.
- Transcripts from all institutions of higher learning the applicant has attended
- Completed Application
Note: Successful Ph.D. applicants most commonly have an MA in history. We are open to PhD applicants with MAs in other fields as well as history-focused M.Div. programs. We do also consider applicants for the PhD who are applying directly from their undergraduate degree, but it is significantly less common for us to offer admittance to these applicants.
International graduate applicants must also demonstrate English-language proficiency by submitting a certificate. Instructions can be found HERE.

Submit all application materials to the Graduate School through the electronic application process (see How to Apply on the Graduate School's Admissions page). You may complete the GoBaylorGrad portion of your online application there or by accessing it below:
