Why Study History?

The study of history provides critical knowledge of the institutions and values of the world in which we live. An understanding of the past can influence one’s ability to respond intelligently and effectively to the problems of the future. To make history, you must know your history.

What can you do with a history degree?

Baylor History Alumni Careers & Fields

Our Baylor History Alumni are working in a variety of careers! These are our alumni’s jobs and career fields from our 2018 survey.

The short answer? Anything you want! It’s an unfortunate myth that history majors have trouble finding jobs. In today’s world, people who can read critically, analyze information, argue persuasively, write well, conduct research, and envision themselves as global citizens are highly sought after. Our history alumni work in a variety of careers!

This article from the American Historical Association's Perspectives on History talks about the value (and marketability) of history degrees: "Entering the Job Market with a BA in History" by Loren Collins.

The American Historical Association has compiled a wonderful group of History Major Testimonials that offer an opportunity to see what being a History Major has given to a dozen individuals throughout various careers.
