More Awards for Our Grad Students
Baylor Ph.D. student Isaac Tuttle won the 2023 Torbet Prize for the Best Essay in any area of Baptist History from the American Baptist Historical Society. Isaac will receive a $500 award and his essay, “Thomas Dixon, Jr. and the 'New Negro',” will be published in an upcoming issue of the American Baptist Quarterly.
The Torbet Prize is named for Robert George Torbet (1912-1995). Torbet’s significant contributions to Baptist research and publication led the American Baptist Historical Society to create an award in his honor to encourage the development of young scholars in the field of Baptist history studies. The judges for the contest, the Research and Publication Committee of the ABHS Board of Managers, unanimously selected Tuttle’s essay for the award.
Tuttle is a second-year doctoral student who studies late nineteenth and early twentieth century ideas about the church and politics, specifically focusing on a Presbyterian strand of two kingdom theology called the spirituality of the church and its cooption by white Southerners.
