Fiorella Contreras, Student Ambassador
We are delighted to introduce Fiorella Contreras, our Student Ambassador for the History Department. Fiorella is a senior History major from Houston, Texas, who has a passion for learning and serving her community. Fiorella shared with us her experience as a Student Ambassador, her future plans, and her favorite memories at Baylor.
What do you do as a Student Ambassador and how does this position impact the history department?
The Student Ambassador position is meant to help the Undergraduate Program Director of its respective department in two ways: 1) by leading with projects for their department’s undergraduate class, and 2) by recruiting the incoming first-year class for the next school year. For the most part, I help with recruiting efforts for our department by reaching out to prospective students and sharing the student experience/answering any questions I can.
What are your future hopes post-graduation?
I will be attending law school in the fall. I plan on going into family and immigration law for Spanish-speaking families (my community) who oftentimes have little access to legal navigation in the USA because of the language barrier and what's known as the "justice gap," the difference between the civil legal needs of low-income Americans and the resources available to meet those needs.
What has been your favorite history class at Baylor?
My favorite history class at Baylor would have to be Dr. Sweet’s Boston Tea Party class. We re-enacted the Boston Tea Party on the Brazos River and did an in-depth dive into micro-history for the semester.
What has been your favorite memory as a Student Ambassador?
My favorite event as a Student Ambassador would have to be participating in Invitation to Excellence. I loved meeting prospective students and sharing what the History Department and Baylor means to me.
We hope you enjoyed getting to know Fiorella better. She is a great example of the talented and dedicated students we have in our department. If you are interested in becoming a Student Ambassador or learning more about our history program, please contact Dr. Watkins, our Undergraduate Program Director, at daniel_watkins@baylor.edu.
