Research Interests
I study religion, race, and cultural memory in the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. I am particularly interested in A.C. Dixon, who was a revivalist and fundamentalist, and his younger brother Thomas Dixon Jr., who was a social gospel minister and racist novelist. Even though the Dixon brothers were on nearly opposite ends of the theological spectrum, they both used their platforms to defend white national unity and American exceptionalism. The Dixon brothers shed light on the complexities of the Lost Cause, the New South, and American Protestantism at the turn of the century.
